To One of the Great Loves of my Life, I was your first Mom…the only one you knew for the first year of your life. You were brought to my home a two day old, 6 pound, frail little creature. My dear, you were a gift from the heavens. As...

You know it…that really stupid policy that says we can’t homeschool our foster kids. We’ve seen the online battles between foster parents with differing opinions. We’ve heard all the reasons why children should or should not attend public or homeschool. I get it. I have no judgment either way. However,...

August is here! School is starting and electricity is in the air with children buying new backpacks, new clothes and all the necessary school supplies. This is an exciting time of year where great childhood memories were made over the past two months. Vacations were enjoyed and the lazy days...

Inspired by many who have experienced life in foster care. Dear Foster Parent, The day I was taken from my home was the worst day of my life. I was scared and desperate to make sense out of what had just happened. I arrived at your home terrified. I...

Dear Teacher, Tomorrow, I will put my daughter on a bus and send her off to an exciting new school year. 2nd grade is a year I honestly never really envisioned when I held that beautiful baby in my arms and dreamt of her future. It’s tucked between the major...

So, vacation has come to an end and we are back in reality again. The trek to and from Navarre, Florida with our crew of 8 plus 2 grandparents was quite adventure filled with great memories and lots of much needed sunshine. In a recent article, The Anxiety Free Vacation,...

Scary, emotional, unpredictable, scheming, hormone driven, false accusation making, window jumping runaways…who could I possibly be referring to? Teenage girls in foster care? These frightening beasts are without a doubt, the most feared children in the foster world. I mean after all, don’t you know, they all are pretty scary. And...

Many years ago I sat on the deck of a beach house with my step-brother. We were enjoying an adult beverage, watching the sunset and catching up. This brother is the quiet one, so having a deep conversation was never really our norm. This night was different. On this night...

Don’t pity my foster children. They don’t need it. Oh, yes, there was a time when I pitied them, but that was short lived. I realized in a quick hurry that there is no time for pity here. Dive into the life of a quality foster parent for even a...

If you want to evoke the passion of a quality foster parent, please spew the phrase, “Foster parents are only in it for the money.” This short phrase will no doubt be reciprocated with a smile, a deep breath and silence as they work to channel Jesus and try hard not to...

Making the choice to foster comes with many fears. Fostering isn’t decided upon lightly. Fear is natural when considering fostering. By far, the most significant fear my hubs and I faced was how fostering would impact our daughter. Are we damaging her by fostering? How can we keep her safe?...

In a previous article, THOSE CRAPPY DCS CASE WORKERS, I shared some insights into the job of a case worker. I am not naïve to think that though their jobs are tough and come with a price emotionally, physically and mentally, that there are not inadequate case workers. With any...

Being a foster parent for a number of years now, I have run into the good, the bad and the ugly regarding DCS Case Workers. My complaints have been many and my crap list is long.
If you are a foster parent, you know exactly what I am talking about. Among my most memorable Case Workers are the following:

I hear it time and time again. “I really admire you.” “I could never be a foster parent.” “I don’t know how you do it.”
“I wouldn’t be able to give them back.”
Well, yes, you could. You wouldn’t have a choice. What this statement really means is, “It would break my heart to give them back.”
